Reviving Professorware: An Agentic Approach

Research software often follows a familiar path: a student develops a tool as part of their research, the tool gains real users, and eventually the student moves on. The software, however, remains at the institute, lacking the time, resources, or expertise needed for further development and maintenance. Over time, useful research tools can become static, even as researchers continue to rely on them. Could AI help bring some of these tools back to life?

bio.tools: keeping up with the growing world of life-science software

Finding the right research software can be challenging, especially as new tools and databases are continually being developed. bio.tools helps researchers navigate this growing landscape by bringing life-science software together in a single registry. It has grown to over 33,000 tools and databases, described using structured metadata and the EDAM ontology.

RDMkit: Guiding Life Scientists in Research Data Management

ELIXIR Estonia is proud to showcase the Research Data Management Kit (RDMkit), a community-led knowledge resource for life sciences that helps researchers and data stewards navigate the complexities of managing research data. Developed through the ELIXIR CONVERGE project and supported by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme, the RDMkit provides guidance on Research Data management that aligns with FAIR principles, ensuring data is findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable.

ELIXIR Estonia hosted the ELIXIR ELITMa module 2 and Interoperability Platform meeting in Tartu

ELIXIR ELITMa workshop

In May, the University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science and ELIXIR Estonia had the pleasure of hosting a productive ELIXIR Week, featuring both the ELITMa and a co-located Interoperability Platform workshop. From May 19th to 22nd, data management experts and colleagues from 11 ELIXIR Nodes across Europe gathered at the Institute of Computer Science to focus on key research data management and interoperability areas.
