Competence day “AI at the university: skills, responsibility and critical choices”
On 29 September from 11:00–17:30, the university library’s conference hall will host the competence day “Artificial intelligence at the university: skills, responsibility and critical choices”, to which the entire university community is warmly invited. The event is organised by the University of Tartu Centre for Teaching and Learning. After the lunch break, practical workshops will run in two sessions: ELIXIR Estonia will teach data visualisation with the help of artificial intelligence.
The use of artificial intelligence at the university is growing faster than we can agree on what to do with it. The aim of the competence day is to raise awareness of the possibilities and effects of artificial intelligence, and to give every participant something tangible to take away – a new skill, a tool, or a clearer sense of what to do next in their own subject or role. The day is suited to both those who are still only considering using artificial intelligence and those who wish to put their existing practice on a more informed footing.
The day opens with a video address from Rector Toomas Asser, followed by a panel discussion in English on which competences the university must develop in the age of artificial intelligence. After the lunch break, practical workshops will run in two sessions: six parallel workshops in the first session and five in the second. The day closes with a panel discussion in Estonian on the environmental impact of artificial intelligence.

ELIXIR Estonia workshop: Data Visualization with AI Tools (Nurlan Kerimov)
Brief description:
This workshop introduces participants to practical data visualization using Google Colab and AI-powered tools. Participants will learn how to explore a dataset, create different types of charts using natural-language prompts, and use AI to identify patterns, anomalies, and insights in their data. No prior programming experience is required.
